Local Artist Pauline Matthews represents Pipestone National Monument by painting a large ornament for display in Washington D.C.

Pipestone artist Pauline Matthews painted an 18 inch ornament ball titled “A Prayer for Peace” which features an acrylic rendering of a Sacred Pipe and several other Native tribe symbols representing peace, nature, and spirituality.  The ornament is hanging on the centerpiece tree in the Blue Room of the White House.  The theme this year is “Holiday in the National Parks”.  There are 347 ornaments on the tree representing the nation’s parks and monuments.  The Pipestone National Monument Ornament will become part of the National Archives in Washington for future generations to enjoy.  Matthews was honored to be selected as the artist for this project where she was able to express her passion for art, the Pipestone National Monument and her Native American spirituality and heritage.  She descends from the Cowasuck Band of the Abenaki Nation.
